* * * *

Landon lay in his room and stared at the wall. It was well past two in the morning, yet he couldn’t sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Silvo coming toward him with more of that blue liquid in the clear bottle, forcing Landon to swallow it down.

And then things would become fuzzy. He remembered, but only in bits and pieces and out of focus, like trying to view life through a fish-eye lens that had cracks in the glass.

There had been a laptop. A split screen. Four blocks on the screen. Like watching a monitoring system with four cameras. But no faces had appeared on those screens.

Only numbers.

The numbers had grown higher and so had Silvo’s tone as he called out a number to put the others to shame. In the end, Silvo had won out. Landon remembered the sickening gleam in the man’s eyes, the triumph as he shoved Landon in the bathroom and told him to take a shower and get ready for the celebration party.

Landon curled into a tighter ball, shivering under the thin blanket. The memories kept coming and he felt like he was going to be sick. The drug was still in his system, making him feel groggy, but at least he could focus again. Right now he would give anything for uneventful sleep. No dreams, no nightmares, just a blissful blank canvas as he rested.

His thoughts turned toward his brother. Chay was a decent father, if being there was what qualified a person as a decent parent. He didn’t smack his kids around or get drunk and hit his wife. Chay worked like any other person with a family to support.

But the guy had a gambling problem that was sooner or later going to get him killed. Landon had tried to help. He’d even suggested meetings. Chay always said he would stop but he never did.

Landon thought about his job and there was no love lost there. By now he was sure he’d been replaced as the head waiter at an upscale restaurant. Mr. Manchi wouldn’t have waited for Landon to show up with a ready excuse or called around in concern that Landon hadn’t been there for work. The guy would have plucked an application from a drawer in his office, made a call, and had someone else there the next night. Maybe the first night Landon hadn’t shown up.

The sad truth was, Landon had nothing to go home to. His apartment had been trashed when loan sharks had contrived creative ways to get what Chay owed them. One of those creative ways had been to torture the shit out of Chay’s older brother.

Landon turned over and began to stare at the opposite wall.

He wasn’t going to get any sleep. The truth became obvious when random thoughts continued to chase through his mind. This is useless. He sat up and pulled the blankets from the bed, wrapping them around his shoulders. Maybe a shower would help? he
